Sometimes, a person endures a personal tragedy that ultimately leads them on a quest to make sure no one else has to suffer the same consequences. Such was the case for Richard Rakowski, founder of Medically Home. His father, who had survived three concentration camps, died as a result of three consecutive medical errors at the hospital. According to Rakowski, this was the result of hospitals constantly pressured to reduce costs.
That’s when he decided to provide an alternative for patients to be cared for at home. However, to make this possible (and realistic), it requires more technology. Some of the technology necessary is to monitor vitals and relay that information to a monitoring station as well as doctors to be able to video chat with their patients on a regular basis.
So far, the results are positive, with a solid round of funding already in place to help Medically Home expand into other regions of the country. According to Boston Business Journals’ article, Boston startup Medically Home wants to bring the hospital to you, written by Jessica Bartlett:
“He founded Medically Home in 2016 as a result. The company aims to eliminate all of the fixed costs of a hospital, and spend more of each medical dollar on actually caring for the patient. It does this by contracting for nurses that visit patients in the home, and coordinating the technology and delivery of medical supplies from a “command center” in Boston.
The company recently closed a $14 million funding round from more than 100 undisclosed investors, and is planning to double its 25-person staff as it expands in Massachusetts and launches in Indiana and New Jersey. Rakowski said he also hopes to launch in Ohio and Virginia next year.”
The entire notion of receiving care at home isn’t new, but in the past this required direct and constant doctor visits and nursing staff on hand at all times. Now, though, with wireless technology, simple to use blood pressure cuffs, and other devices, the possibilities continue to expand.
People who receive care at home often report feeling more positive, not just about their day-to-day lives, but also about the quality of care they receive. The emotional outlook of an individual has a direct impact on their physical health and while Medically Home was borne out of a desire to reduce medical errors, it has also laid a foundation for improve care and support for each client where they are most comfortable: at home.
