Artificial Intelligence may have once been the purview of science fiction and fantasy novels and movies, but it is reality today. While it may not be lifelike robots experiencing emotions and personal connections with humans, AI is here, and it’s here to stay.
There are numerous potential applications for Artificial Intelligence, not the least of which involves in-home care support services. Artificial Intelligence essentially refers to computer based technology that has the ability to learn from past experiences, input data, and more without the direct influence of a programmer.
For stroke victims, artificial intelligence is currently helping people regain some measure of lost mobility. BIONIK Laboratories has developed “InMotion” systems that are essentially a robotic system that helps individuals learn to manipulate and use their arm, hand, and even their wrist again.
This type of robotic therapy relies on artificial intelligence to offer the patient the precise level of assistance he or she requires, and it learns as the individual shows improvement and can even analyze where more assistance and work could be required to help them regain mobility.
Employed in an in-home care environment, this is just one small example of how artificial intelligence could alter the landscape of home care support in the coming years.
As reported by The Boston Herald article, Artificial intelligence-powered robots help stroke victims, written by Alexi Cohan:
“[Dr. Eric] Dusseux [CEO of BIONIK] said the autonomy and self-esteem experienced by patients using the robots “is exactly what you need when you’re a patient suffering from neurological disease.”
The system even has therapies styled like video games for younger patients. A typical session with the robot may last 30 minutes to an hour, with thousands of people using the 250 systems that have been implemented in over 20 countries.
Dusseux said the artificial intelligence data is processed to help patients and doctors get a good idea of progress, often boosting the spirits of those who are frustrated with their limited mobility.”
There are numerous potential applications for artificial intelligence in home care settings. Being able to learn and adapt to an elderly patient’s physical abilities, personality, preferences, and more can all be powerful assets for daily living, not just physical therapy.
Computer technology has been viewed as an important and growing asset for in-home care support services. Home care companies that invest in innovation technology, even including potential artificial intelligence devices, could potentially have an advantage over competitors that don’t offer these advancing opportunities.
